The Lost River flows south to north through the valley of the same name,

parallel to the Shenandoah Valley and the I-81 corridor. Our Valley lies

between Great North Mountain to the east and South Branch Mountain to

the west. 

The valley was originally settled--by Europeans, that is--in the mid-1700s.

While historically the community has relied heavily on agriculture, the

town of Lost City grew up around a tannery, which thrived from 1892 until

it closed in 1927.  Now not much more than a wide spot in the road, Lost

City once had a theater company, a baseball team, a newspaper and three



With its natural resources, spectacular views and easy pace, the valley is a

favorite weekend destination for Washingtonians and anyone else seeking

to escape the hustle and bustle of city life.  Whether your ideal weekend

involves hip waders and a fly rod or a good book and a pair of comfortable

shoes, you'll find what you're looking for in and around Lost River.
